HS 9506.99.90 - Other sports equipment. Less common but possible. MFN duty rate is typically 0%.

The good news: under current Canadian tariff rules, inflatable SUPs from China typically enter at 0% MFN duty regardless of which classification applies. The bad news: tariff classifications can change, and CBSA has been known to reclassify products after import - which can trigger retroactive duty assessments. CPSIA (U.S.): If you plan to sell into the U.S. as well, you need CPSIA compliance for lead and phthalates. The standards are very close to Canadian requirements, so a board that meets CPSIA generally meets CCPSA too.

ISO 9001: Factory quality management certification. This is about the factory's processes, not the specific product. A factory with ISO 9001 is more likely to have consistent quality, but it doesn't guarantee any individual board is safe.

BSCI / Sedex: Social compliance audits. Not required by Canadian law, but many large retailers and brands require their suppliers to have these. If you plan to sell to major Canadian retail chains, BSCI certification at your factory is increasingly expected.

TÜV / SGS product test reports: Third-party testing by accredited labs. These are the most credible form of compliance documentation. Ask for test reports specifically for the model you're ordering, not a generic report from a different product.

The practical approach: request third-party test reports for phthalates, lead, and pressure/burst testing for the exact models you're ordering. Keep these on file. If Health Canada ever asks, you need to produce them.

Full Container Load (FCL): You rent an entire container (20-foot or 40-foot). This is the cheapest per-unit option for orders over approximately 300 units. A 40-foot high-cube container holds roughly 800–1,000 inflatable SUPs in their retail packaging. FCL is also faster because the container goes directly from the factory to the port without consolidation.

Less than Container Load (LCL): Your goods share a container with other shipments. This is more expensive per unit (typically 2–3x the FCL per-unit freight cost) and slower because of consolidation and deconsolidation at both ends. Only use LCL for trial orders under 200 units, or for urgent top-up orders mid-season.

Rail freight (China → Europe → Canada): The Trans-Canadian rail connection via the Trans-Siberian railway is sometimes promoted as an alternative, but for China-to-Canada shipments, it's rarely competitive. It's faster than sea (18–25 days vs. 25–35 days) but significantly more expensive, and the route reliability has been inconsistent since 2022. Not recommended for SUPs.

Air freight: 5–7 days, but 4–6x the cost of sea freight. Only use air freight if you've run out of stock mid-season and need to cover a specific order. For a seasonal product like inflatable SUPs, running out in July and air-freighting 100 units can be worth it to preserve a retail relationship - but it should never be your primary shipping method.

Retail box dimensions: Work with the factory to design the retail box as compact as possible. A box that's 90cm × 40cm × 20cm fits more units per container than one that's 100cm × 45cm × 25cm. The difference can be 100+ units per 40-foot container.

Accessory packaging: The paddle, pump, leash, and fin should be packed inside the same box as the rolled board, not in separate boxes. Separate accessory boxes waste container space.

Master cartons: Most factories pack 1 retail box per master carton for SUPs (because each unit is already bulky). Confirm this - if they're using oversized master cartons, you're paying to ship air.

Container loading: A 40-foot HQ container has approximately 76 cubic meters of usable space. At 0.09 cubic meters per unit, that's about 840 units - but real-world loading efficiency is 80–85%, so plan for 670–710 units per 40-foot HQ. If your order is 800 units, you'll need a second container for the overflow (or negotiate LCL for the remainder).

Arrival: The ship docks, the container is offloaded, and CBSA decides whether to inspect or release. Most shipments are released without inspection (approximately 85–90%).

Inspection (if selected): CBSA may inspect the container for compliance, misclassification, or prohibited goods. An inspection adds 3–7 days and can cost CAD $300–$800 in exam fees. Having complete, accurate documentation reduces inspection risk.

Release and payment: Once released, you pay the GST (and any duty, if applicable) to your broker, who pays CBSA on your behalf. The broker then releases the container to the trucking company.

Inland delivery: The container is trucked from the port to your warehouse. For Vancouver to Ontario, this is approximately 4–6 days.

Warehouse receiving: Your warehouse unloads, counts, inspects for damage, and enters the inventory into your system.

Some factories offer:

30/70 with balance against copy of B/L - you pay the 70% after the goods are on the ship, against a copy of the bill of lading. This is slightly better for your cash flow but requires a factory that trusts you.

L/C (Letter of Credit) - common for very large orders ($100,000+), but adds bank fees and complexity. Most SUP orders are too small for L/C to be practical.

Net 30 or Net 60 - extremely rare for first-time customers. Factories may offer this after 2–3 successful orders and a proven payment track record.

Never pay 100% upfront to a factory you haven't worked with. The 30/70 split is standard for a reason: it gives the factory security to buy materials while giving you leverage to ensure production quality before you pay the balance.
